Typography

The group of nine text settings on the column: family, size, weight, style, line height, letter spacing, alignment, decoration, and transform.

In plain English

Typography is not one setting but a group of nine, collected together because they all shape how the words in the column look. Open it and you will find each one with its own control.

Every setting in this group is inherited, which is the reason to use them here rather than on each component. Set the font family once on the column and every heading, paragraph, and label inside picks it up. Change it later and everything changes together.

The nine are: Family (which typeface), Size (how big), Weight (how bold), Style (upright or italic), Line height (how far apart the lines sit), Letter spacing (how far apart the characters sit), Align (left, centre, right, justified), Decoration (underline and strikethrough), and Transform (forcing upper or lower case).

How to change it

  1. Select the column, open "Selected Column", then "Typography".
  2. Each of the nine settings has its own label and control inside the group.
  3. Use the eye icon next to any of them for a page dedicated to that one setting.
One value, or one per device? Every input in this setting sits under a “Same value for all resolutions” checkbox. Leave it checked for a single value everywhere, or uncheck it to give phones, tablets, and desktops their own. How per-device values work.

Watch out for

  • These settings are inherited, so a component that sets its own font or size explicitly will ignore what you set here.
  • Setting typography on the column rather than on individual components is almost always the better choice — it keeps a section consistent and gives you one place to change it.
