What you can do
Maya is in Cursor, drafting the copy for her homepage hero. The photograph is a link her designer sent. She does not have to download it, open the team, and sit on the upload page. She connects RuleCMS once, then asks the agent to add that link to Images. The file shows up in the same library as a file she uploaded by hand.
Two jobs this is for:
- The file is already a link. A public URL, a CDN address, an export someone pasted in chat. The agent adds it. You stay in the conversation.
- The file is on the computer, and you are already talking to the agent. You name the file. The agent sends it and registers it. The Images page is still the better door when you want the grid, several files in a row, and the progress bar in front of you.
The first walkthrough, with the size limits and the permission, is Images and videos. Connecting is the step below.
How a connection thinks
MCP is an open way for an app such as Cursor to call tools on a service you trust. RuleCMS is one of those services. The address is https://rulecms.com/mcp. You sign in with the same RuleCMS account you use in the browser. There is no second password and no shared key to paste into a config file.
Here is the case that surprises people. Maya connects, then asks the agent to upload a photograph to a client's team. The agent refuses. She can open her own team in the dashboard, and she cannot open theirs. MCP does not add a permission. It uses the one she already has. If Manage Media Assets is missing, the upload page would have stopped her too.
Ask AI in the composer is a different feature. It can place a file that is already in the library. It cannot upload one. An agent you connect here can upload, and only when that signed-in account could upload in the dashboard.
The protocol itself — what a tool is, what a resource is, how any client speaks it — is the MCP introduction. How Cursor installs a server is Cursor's MCP guide.
Connect RuleCMS in Cursor
This is the path from a fresh Cursor window to a signed-in RuleCMS connection. Other apps that speak MCP use the same address. Their screens differ, so follow that app's own MCP page after you have the URL.
- Create
.cursor/mcp.jsonin the project, or~/.cursor/mcp.jsonif you want RuleCMS in every project. Cursor's guide covers both files. - Put the RuleCMS server in it. Do not add an authorization header. Cursor will ask you to sign in.
{ "mcpServers": { "rulecms": { "url": "https://rulecms.com/mcp" } } } - Save the file. If the server does not appear, restart Cursor. Open the MCP list and sign in with the RuleCMS account that should do the work. That sign-in is the dashboard login.
- Ask something small first: which teams this account can open. Then ask it to add the photograph, using Images and videos.
What the agent can reach
After you sign in, the agent lists the tools that account may call. Each job below has a guide. The agent still needs the same permission the page would ask for.
| When you reach for it | What the agent can do | Read this |
|---|---|---|
| Add a photograph or a clip | Put a public image or video, or a file on the computer, into the team Images or Videos library. Same size limits and the same Manage Media Assets grant as the upload page. | Images and videos |
| Projects and environments | Create a project, its environments, an app, and a Development token. The token is stored with a dev. prefix. Only one token can be enabled for the same app and environment. | Projects, environments, and tokens |
| Widgets | Create the homepage hero in Development, rename it, save the layout and CSS, and publish it. Name the widget. An empty catalog save clears the CSS settings. | Widgets |
| Collections | Create and edit a shared collection, then publish that draft to Staging. Same Collection Access as the Collections page. | Collections |
| Ask AI | Start, read, step, answer, and cancel a turn. Same account and the same credit as the composer panel. Hash the saved rows. Cancel does not undo. | Ask AI |
| Remote configurations | Read and change a JSON flag, such as a homepage sale, and promote that same key to Staging. Copy To is only for an environment that is not Staging or Production. | Remote configurations |
| People and access | Invite the designer by email, see the groups, and approve a request to join. They still accept on the dashboard. | People |
| Component libraries | Register the Library ID, and change the version, the description, or Active. The package still has to be enabled before the card appears on the palette. | Component libraries |
| Plan, storage, and usage | Read the plan, the view and credit meters, and production usage. A member sees the meters. View Team Billing and View Team Analytics see more. This page does not change a subscription. | Plan and usage |
A RuleCMS administrator also sees tools for administration. Everyone else does not. If a tool is missing, the account cannot do that job in the dashboard either.

How this fits
MCP does not replace the dashboard, and it does not replace Ask AI. Ask AI edits the widget you have open. MCP lets an outside agent do dashboard jobs, including adding a file to the library, as the person who signed in. The photograph still belongs to the team. She still picks it with Select Image, and she still publishes when the hero looks right.
