- Where to find it
- Labelled Embed URL in the "Selected Component" section of the Modify drawer.
- Offered by
- The Embed component. Other components do not have this setting.
- Per device
- Yes — you can set one value for every screen, or separate values for phone, tablet, and desktop.
In plain English
This is the whole of the Embed component: paste an address here and that page appears inside yours. Everything else on the embed is about how it looks.
You can paste the address from your browser's address bar. For a YouTube video, the long watch link and the short share link both work, and so does a Short or a live stream — they all end up showing the same video. Vimeo works the same way, including unlisted videos, as long as you copy the whole address rather than trimming it.
Only four kinds of address work: YouTube, Vimeo, Google Maps, and Calendly. This is a deliberate limit rather than a list that has not been finished. An embed runs somebody else's page inside yours, with access to whatever your visitor does inside that frame, so RuleCMS only allows the services it has checked. If you need one that is not on the list, ask — adding one is a small change, but it is one somebody has to make on purpose.
The field tells you which it is as you type. Paste something it recognises and it names the provider; paste something it does not and it says so, and the column stays empty until you change it.
When you would use it
- A YouTube or Vimeo video that lives on that service rather than being uploaded to RuleCMS.
- A map showing where your business is.
- A Calendly booking page, so visitors can book without leaving your site.
How to change it
- Click the embed on the canvas.
- In the Modify drawer, open "Selected Component", then "Embed URL".
- Paste the address and wait a moment — the field will confirm which provider it recognised.
- Uncheck "Same value for all resolutions" to show a different address on phones.
Watch out for
- For a map, the address in your browser bar does not work. Google does not allow an ordinary Maps page inside another site. In Google Maps, choose Share, then the "Embed a map" tab, and copy the address out of the HTML it shows you — it is the part in quotes after src=.
- Nothing appears at all when the address is not recognised. There is no error box on the page, by design: a visitor should never see a broken embed. Check the message under the field.
- The address must start with https://. An http:// address will not embed.
- Videos set to private, or restricted so they cannot be played on other sites, will show the provider's own error inside the frame. That is between you and the provider — RuleCMS cannot see it.
- An embed loads a whole second page inside yours. Two or three on one page is noticeably slower for visitors; consider linking to some of them instead.
