Video Muted

Whether the video starts with its sound turned off.

Where to find it
Labelled Video Muted in the "Selected Component" section of the Modify drawer.
Offered by
The Video component. Other components do not have this setting.
Per device
Yes — you can set one value for every screen, or separate values for phone, tablet, and desktop.

In plain English

Muting starts the video silent. The sound is not removed — a visitor can turn it back on from the controls whenever they like — it simply does not arrive uninvited.

This setting has a second job that matters more than the first: it is what makes autoplay legal. Browsers block autoplaying video that has sound, so a background clip that plays on its own must be muted or it will not play at all.

For a video someone presses play on deliberately, leave it unmuted. They asked for it; they expect to hear it.

What each option does

OptionWhat you will see
trueStart silent. Required for autoplay to work.
falseStart with sound. The right choice for a video the visitor presses play on.

When you would use it

  • Any autoplaying video — this is not optional there.
  • A clip whose soundtrack adds nothing.

How to change it

  1. Click the video component on the canvas.
  2. In the Modify drawer, open "Selected Component", then "Video Muted".
  3. Choose "true" or "false".
One value, or one per device? Every input in this setting sits under a “Same value for all resolutions” checkbox. Leave it checked for a single value everywhere, or uncheck it to give phones, tablets, and desktops their own. How per-device values work.

Watch out for

  • If you set Video Autoplay, set this to "true" as well. Autoplay with sound is blocked by every current browser.
  • If the video conveys something through speech, muting it by default means most visitors miss the point entirely. Say it in text nearby too.
  • Muted and controls hidden together means the sound is unreachable. Leave the controls on if the audio matters at all.
